A History with Heart
The Have A Heart Clinic is a 501(c)(3) organization founded on the belief that “free care doesn’t have to cost much.” Based in Louisville, Kentucky, the Have A Heart Clinic volunteer cardiovascular specialists provide free medical services to uninsured patients and persons living at 200% federal poverty level. Indigent patients travel from all parts of Jefferson County and Southern Indiana to be diagnosed, treated and educated about heart disease. Our patients are often referred to the Clinic because either they cannot afford the high premiums mandated by insurance plans or they cannot find a specialist who will accept their Medicaid coverage.
Dr. Michael Imburgia, the founder of Have A Heart Clinic, is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, board certified in cardiology, subspecialty certified in Echocardiography and Nuclear cardiology. After twenty-seven years in practice, Dr. Imburgia, his wife Sandy (a Registered Nurse) and their long-time friend Susan Dillon (Ultrasound Technician) began serving low-income and uninsured patients out of Dr. Imburgia’s practice in East Louisville. What subsequently evolved is the only solely cardiovascular care clinic in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Dr. Imburgia, the Board of Directors, and supporters of Have A Heart’s mission have witnessed first-hand the enormous life-saving impact that free cardiovascular care has had on our community. The Clinic’s approach to indigent care is a sound and sustainable model for the future, which is why Have A Heart is intent on offering its services to all patients, insured and otherwise as a long-term sustainable solution to heart health.
Sandy Imburgia RN, received her nursing degree from Jewish Hospital School of Nursing at Washington University, St Louis Mo. Sandy’s focus during her nursing career was in the Cardiac Care Unit , Telemetry Unit and Hemodialysis.
Sandy co-founded the Have A Heart Clinic and is equally passionate about helping the poor receive quality medical care. Sandy’s involvement with Have A Heart ranges from her clinical nursing skills to patient and clinic scheduler. Sandy coordinated and managed the renovation of the current facility. She also, along with many volunteers, poured her own time, talents and treasures into refurbishing furniture, painting, moving equipment and improving the aesthetic of the clinic space. Have A Heart owes its “curb appeal” and comfort to Sandy’s hard work and dedication. Sandy also gives generously of her time to the outreach lunch program at the Cathedral of the Assumption.
Sandy has been married to Dr. Michael Imburgia for 30 years and is the mother of 3 grown children.
